The Power of Complements

Purple and yellow are opposite each other on the color wheel.  This relationship provides an opportunity to intensify the contrast.  My sunflower painting uses value contrast as well as complementary color contrast.  There is always a risk of the complements clashing, but the purples are much less intense than the yellows, and the yellows dominate the painting because they take up more space.
